She told BuzzFeed News she pulled the costume together relatively quickly: “The base is a black flight suit, vintage military boots, and a black wig. The vest is made from spray-painted military surplus, padded belt spray-painted white and cut in half, and a spray-painted winter puffy vest. Next up was the AS/400 and finally the IBM i, which is still in production. Here’s a secret, though, most of the code I’ve seen running on an IBM i dates back to at least the System/3 days and maybe even before that. If you are interested in history, or midrange computers (which are mainframe-like in their operation), you might want to actually play with a real machine. A quick glance at eBay tells me that you might be able to get something workable for about $1000. Maybe. That’s a bit much. What if you could get time on one for free? Turns out, you can. Here is a somewhat morbid project shared by DeadAugust on Instructables . What are you going to do with the time you have? In short, it’s a wrist-worn Adafruit Circuit Playground that displays a randomly generated (but statistically informed) number of days I have left to live. Fun! Basic premise is: it operates on code that randomly generates these days based on an actuarial table I found that gave me the probability I would die in various age blocks. So every now and then it’ll change — one day it’ll say I have 23,454 days left, another only 19. And it’s all on a randomized timer as well, so I never know when it’ll change, allowing it to catch me off guard and hopefully make me shift perspective in that moment and internalize that life expectancy.
