American Apparel Founder Dov Charney Gives Odd Answer to Question About Having Sex With Employees

Image
American Apparel founder Dov Charney, who left after a string of sexual harassment allegations from his own employees , had a strange response when asked if he was having sex with workers at his new clothing company , Los Angeles Apparel. “That question is private, and it should be private,” Charney said Wednesday in an interview with Bloomberg when asked if he was “going down the same path at Los Angeles Apparel and hooking up with employees.” The interviewer then asked if Charney was being “more careful” at his new company. “You always have to be cautious in the lawsuit society that we're in, you know. … I love the company, and I love the people I work with,” he responded. “We're very close and we're holding hands and walking through the fire. We intend to be successful,” Charney added. Charney was never charged or convicted for the sexual harassment claims brought against him, which included allegations from American Apparel board members that he kept kept graphic ...

Here's the difference between a real estate crash and a correction

Image
REUTERS/Buddhika Weerasinghe Despite a number of people throwing down the terms “correction” and “crash,” not a lot of people know what these terms mean. Just so we’re all on the same page, we thought we’d put together a quick guide. This way you millennials will understand what all of those old bears mean (or if they’re just making stuff up). What is a real estate correction? A real estate correction is relatively minor drop in the market. The market is in correction territory when the home price index falls not more than 10% from the highest price within a year. Corrections happen with greater frequency than you might expect, and are generally good for balancing market demand. What is a real state crash? A real estate crash is much less common than the media would have you think. When the home price index falls by more than 10% from the 52 week peak value, you’re experiencing a crash. Crashes are relatively rare, and are usually accompanied by a strong decline in economi...

It looks like Apple will have plenty of iPhone owners that could use an upgrade this holiday season (AAPL)

Image
As smartphones have gotten stronger, the pressure on people to upgrade their phones has dipped. Apple’s iPhone is no exception to that, according to recent Newzoo data charted for us by Statista . There were 728 million iPhones still in use as of April 2017, according to Newzoo. The most widely-active model within that pool of devices was the iPhone 6, which accounted for 21% of active iPhones worldwide. In total, a little over half of the iPhones in use were released in 2014 or earlier. Depending on how bullish you are on the iPhones expected to launch this fall, this is either an exciting sign or a worrying trend for Apple. Right now, the rumors suggest Apple will launch three phones for the holidays: two standard iPhone 7s upgrades, and a so-called iPhone 8 that’s said to feature a revamped design. If those phones are excellent, they could coerce the relatively large number of people with three-year-old iPhones to upgrade. That’d make Apple’s shareholders happy, as iPhone sales...

Trump’s Pick to Head FDIC Withdraws From Consideration

Image
James Clinger, picked by President Donald Trump in June to head the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, announced on Wednesday he was withdrawing his name from consideration. He has asked to be removed as the president’s pick to head the U.S. bank regulator, citing family-related issues. “It is … with a sense of regret that I have asked the White House to withdraw my nomination. I did so after concluding that the family-related obligations that prompted me to leave government service earlier this year – which have grown more challenging in the interim – are incompatible with the demands of leading an important federal agency like the FDIC,” Clinger said in a statement. Clinger, who spent two decades as a Republican staff member of the House Financial Services Committee, was nominated for the post in June. His withdrawal is a setback for the Trump administration, as the president has said his top priorities include easing rules on the banking sector to spur economic growth. The ...

The McConnell Healthcare Follies…Continued

Image
Back in June, just after Senate leaders released their version of Trumpcare, I asked: " Did Senate Republicans Knowingly Craft Their Health Care Bill to Fail? " My answer to that question then was that, despite seven year's worth of rancorous rhetoric over Obamacare, a substantial core of GOP senators didn't truly want to be saddled with owning its replacement--particularly, an unpopular and inadequate one. And rather than continue to waste their dwindling political capital ramming through a massive cut in health coverage that an equally massive chunk of the country says it doesn't want , they would effectively stage a vote on an unpassable bill, blame everyone (but themselves), and then move on to what they really care about: corporate tax reform. I still believe that. But Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, has introduced a new wrinkle that might appear to undercut the theory. The chamber's principal has canceled recess--or at least postponed it . ...
